I’ve been playing for a little over a year…I tend to pull my irons but push or slice my driver and woods. Is this a common problem?

  13. jaacobbowden says:

Have you been custom fit for your clubs? If you are pulling your irons, they might be a little bit too upright. Scroll through our channel…we’ve got several videos about pulls and slices that may be useful for you.

  14. tubeboy7575 says:

I have not… I have my eyes on a set of AP1 Titelist irons. The videos are helpful but I am afraid I already have some bad habits to break :)

  15. jaacobbowden says:

If you decide to get the AP1s, have the lie angles bent to fit your swing. It won’t cost much (some places even throw it in as part of the purchase), but it’s very worthwhile…it’s kind of like getting the right size shoe because not everyone fits in to the average size (which is how clubs are built). Tiger actually has his irons bent up 1 degree.

Exactly. Another web over-simplification of a fairly complex maneuver. Other flaws could be:
Bad shaft angle halfway down. Aggressively turning the hips too early. Failure to aggressively turn through the hit. Lead-hand knuckles not pointing down at impact, etc., etc., etc.

  17. telescope3 says:

    Too true.

  18. telescope3 says:

I agree. A good swing will always produce a good release. Halfway down achieve a good shaft angle. At impact: back of lead hand square to the target with lead hand “knucks-down”. Left side pulling out of the way so that the right side can contribute. Trying to control/time the clubhead directly will only throw off your overall timing and body positions.

Great video. I had just started releasing the club today, and looked at vids to confirm what I’m doing.

The increase in power is definitely noticable, and the ball gets compressed every time. Some videos on youtube are saying “Don’t flip the wrists” – they should be more specific, as they could discourage people from properly releasing.

    Nice…

  21. jaacobbowden says:

    Thanks, glad it helped.

…and good comment about not flipping vs. discouraging a release. :-)

For a long time instructors taught students to have the feeling you were “sitting” on a bar stool. I always believed we should have been teaching people to feel as though you were “leaning” back on a stool. The last thing you would ever want to do is sit in golf. Sitting will cause the golf club to swing too level to the ground in the downswing, and you will have a tendency to hit the ground behind the golf ball. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
